Supplies

Our classroom will have pencils, scissors, paper, glue and crayons that your child will be able to use in the classroom.  I will provide each student with two two-pocket folders to keep in their desk for their "work in progress".  Some students like to bring in their own supplies and keep them in their desk.  Your child is welcome to bring in any extra supplies except 3-ring notebooks.  The notebooks are too big for the desks.

Some extra helpful supplies are:

  1. gallon size Zip Loc bags - to get homework projects home and back

  2. quart size Zip Loc bags

  3. snack size Zip Loc bags

  4. one box of tissue

  5. erasers - pencil top and "big ones"

  6. antibacterial baby wipes - great for cleaning desks especially after snack and gluing

  7. colored pencils

  8. tote bag or backpack - things are not so easily lost when placed in a special bag

  9. gym shoes - students can change into them when they come in from outside.  It saves the classroom carpeting from extra wear and tear.

Please label all supplies that come to school.  Thanks.

Communications

The key to a successful school year is communication.  We are a team.  The team members are students, parents and the teacher.  When working together we form a solid triangle to ensure success.  Everyone is an important member of our team.  If one piece is missing in the triangle, it isn't a triangle, so please communicate with me.

Classroom work folders will be sent home every week.  The folders are for you to review your child's progress at home.  The folders do not need to be returned unless on the top of the paper is is marked "return please".

Weekly notes will be sent home on Mondays to keep you informed of our weekly curriculum, activities and special needs for the week.

Daily or individual notes will be sent home as needed.

Phone calls, conferences and emails will be made to address any specific concerns, problems, or progress that arise and need to be discussed or shared with you.

If during the year you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.  I am glad to meet with you anytime.

Homework

Homework sent home always has a purpose.  It will compliment our curriculum, encourage fundamental physical development and encourage interaction within the family.  At times, students don't complete an activity at school or wish to have "homework".  Homework that needs to be returned to school will have a note attached to it to let you know of its importance.  All other "homework" was student desired and does not need to be sent to school unless your child would like to share it with others.  Homework usually will be sent home Monday - Thursday.

Nutrition Break

A proper diet helps students concentrate better at school.  Drinking water is a simple way to keep the body and mind refreshed and alert.  We have a drinking fountain in our classroom so students will not need to bring a water bottle.

A nutritious snack in the morning also helps keep students focused and functioning at their best level.  It's hard to concentrate on learning when your tummy's rumbling and lunch seems like it will never come.  Snacks for nutrition break should be limited in sugar so candy, cookies and other desserts are not allowed.  Recommended snacks are:  cheese, fruit, fruit juice, crackers or raw vegetables.

Birthday Celebrations

Birthday celebrations are always a special occasion in first grade.  Birthday treats may be brought in for the classroom.  Please plan for 24 students.

Summer birthdays will be celebrated at our End of the Year Banana Split Party.  Students having a summer birthday will bring in one half-gallon of their favorite ice cream.  All other students will bring in a topping.

Parties

We will celebrate the following holidays with parties:  Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day.  Students will plan the menu for each party.  Each student will be asked to contribute treats or paper goods for one of the parties.

Throughout the year, we will have special activities that will require food or paper goods.  These special activities are, Thanksgiving Feast, Clown Day and Patriotic Day.  Sign-up sheets will be sent home for families to volunteer a snack donation.

Parent Involvement

Parents are a very important part of our classroom to help the students grow academically and socially.  This year we will work together to provide your child with activities, which will encourage language development, motor skills, social skills and academic skills.  Show a positive attitude toward learning and school to your child.

Be an encourager...

Language Skills

Talk to your child in complete sentences and have your child answer you in complete sentences.  It really helps your child understand the relationship between speaking, reading and writing.

Motor Skills

Play with your child.

Social Skills

Model good manners  and expect your child to practice good manners.  Children imitate what they see.

Academic Skills

Let your child see you read.  Talk to your child about what skills you use each day when you pay for things, balance your checkbook. write out your grocery list, cook, or build things.  Show interest in your child's daily activities at school.  Ask questions about what they are doing and learning in school, what did they like best about school today.
